Sometimes a friend has to file a complaint.

If you'd like to help us stay vigilant about protecting the creek, then your observations are greatly appreciated! Living in a democracy allows us to petition our local, state, and national legislators for redress and action when laws are being ignored or violated. The process is mostly anonymous.

To file a complaint, follow these 3 easy steps. If you need any help along the way, feel free to contact us for assistance and we'll do everything we can to assist you in exercising your rights as a community member.

First fill out this online form for FOHC.

This enables us to follow-up on your complaint and add it to our registry. Rather than worry over whether it will get lost in the shuffle, we can be proactive by maintaining records of the shuffle. If you prefer not to finish the other two steps, mention that in your complaint and we will contact you to see if you'd like for us to file the complaint with ADEM in your stead. Once you fill out this form, we will receive an email indicating you have a complaint.

Next contact the City of Tuscaloosa.

Currently there is no way to file an online complaint with the city. You must dial 311 and explain to the operator that you want to file an environmental complaint. The operator will take your message and try to arrange an inspection within a week. You may receive a follow-up call in some instances.

Please notify us of any environmental complaint you file.  Then let us know what response you receive.

Finally, file an online complaint with the state of Alabama.

To submit an anonymous complaint related to environmental misuse, damage, or neglect in the state of Alabama, you can use the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) online complaint form. This step ensures that a record of a particular environmental issue is created, and this matters because environmental issues are easily overlooked in local politics.

For ADEM to address your complaint adequately, you must provide certain information. Please describe your complaint in as much detail as possible. Include information about when you first noticed the problem and how often it occurs. State specifically where it is from, if known. It would be beneficial if you included the name and address of the source. If you do not have an address for the complaint site, driving directions beginning at a major intersection will be necessary. Be sure the driving directions are complete. You are not required to submit your name, address, phone number, or email address.

Once you fill out the form and click submit, you will be given a Complaint # that you can use to track status and progress. Please keep in mind that your complaint will not be available via the main search page, until one of the staff has reviewed it for validity. This make take several days to a week. Keep checking back to see if your complaint has been moved into processing.

If you'd like to take it to the national level, the option is available to those with the time. To file a complaint with the EPA, follow the instructions and qualifications listed at the EPA Inspector General's page.
