303(d) LIST

Hurricane Creek is on a national list of streams that suffer from too much pollution. The "303(d) list" is named for the section of the Clean Water Act that establishes the list of polluted streams. A stream is considered impaired when it does not meet its designated use. Hurricane Creek is designated as "Fish and Wildlife," which means that its water quality must be good enough to sustain fish and other wildlife.

Three areas of the Hurricane Creek watershed are on the 303(d) list. The mainstem of Hurricane Creek is on the list because its waters contain too much silt, too much fecal coliform bacteria, and high concentrations of certain metals, such as iron and aluminum. The North Fork of Hurricane Creek is on the 303(d) list because concentrations of aluminum are too high in its waters. Little Hurricane Creek is also listed because of metals and fecal coliform.
